We are delighted to announce this year’s recipient of the Adolf Busch Award: Jazz Hands for Autism. Jazz Hands for Autism was founded in 2014, and creates pathways for employment and community for musicians who are on the Autism Spectrum. The classes follow a Learn — Model — Apply framework, where Learn is 1-1 career coaching, Model is interactive group courses with local artists and Apply is experiential learning through job placement. With national estimates suggesting that 90% of the population on the autism spectrum are unemployed or underemployed, Jazz Hands for Autism seeks to bridge that gap. The organization has helped employee over 200 musicians to date.
Jazz Hands for Autism will use the $10,000 reward to improve opportunities for its students by adding in vocational training for 30 students, advance their composer mentorship program, promote their Music Library, and purchase accessible equipment for students with motor issues. Once again, we were enormously impressed with the number of quality applications this year, which made it another competitive year for the Award. Thank you to all the worthy organizations who applied, especially our additional finalists, Daniel’s Music Foundation, Make Music Matter and Concerts in Motion. We are looking forward to next year’s award process, so stay tuned for more information.
